This study evaluates teachers' perceptions of the capabilities and challenges associated with AI at El Carmen Educational Unit, Ecuador. Using a quantitative-descriptive approach, a survey was applied to the 21 teachers at the institution, exploring three dimensions: knowledge about AI, AI capabilities in education, and AI challenges. The results indicate that while most teachers have basic knowledge about AI, there is a significant gap in their familiarity with practical applications and ethical aspects. Teachers positively value AI's capabilities to personalize teaching and improve access to digital resources but express concerns about data privacy and the potential replacement of teaching roles. This study underscores the need for teacher training programs that address both technical and ethical aspects of AI, and highlights the importance of clear privacy and security policies. By better understanding teachers' perceptions, effective strategies can be designed to integrate AI into the educational system, maximizing its benefits and mitigating its challenges
